Widows join NGOs to take action against sexual violence

Forced marriage and sexual abuse plague widows in Cameroon. Working with associations, they are now educating peers about their rights and plan to extend their activities throughout the country.   Hélène Tchomgoé, a widow of 49, is a member of Feravocam, an association that supports widows and orphans.

    Each year is the same

    According to the NGO Marapa, between September and December, of the 22 turtles that arrived on the coast of Sao Tome and Principe, only three spawned; the rest were captured by local hunters.

    A Ten-year project

    The Tatô House (photo) and the NGO Mar ambiente and pesca artesanal (Marapa) have developed projects to preserve five different species of sea turtles.

    NGOs inform that four to five turtles of the species were collected each day. Hunters allege that this activity provides the money that supports their families. Each turtle is sold for 120 USD.

    No vigilance

    The region of Praia Cumprida lacks vigilance; the organization considers the district of Cantagalo as a hunting paradise because of this. The beach is deserted and isolated and each group of hunters has its own territory for its activities.

    Hunters in São Tomé stay overnight in tents by the beach, covered by coconut leaves. Turtle meat sells well in São Tomé markets. It is considered an aphrodisiac by the people. The shell is used for craftwork and souvenirs.

    Protection Schedule

    The organizations have protection teams. The peak nesting period on beaches is in January and egg-laying continues until April. Researchers from Portugal, France and Germany buy live turtles.

    Vigilants of Tatô Program (one pictured here) have been advised to stop their work to not risk their lives; hunters have guns and they have to avoid a confrontation. There are no rules that regulate this predatory activity.

    Back to the sea

    After the incubation period, the sea turtles are released on the beach. The Tatô House funds the protection program through tourism. Vigilantes go to beaches, collect sea turtle eggs and save them.
